Skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States broke Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 World Cup victories, which had stood since 1989. Only one day before, Shiffrin had tied the record set by the Swedish great, which had held for 34 years, in a slalom race in Are, Sweden. It didn’t take long for the world to recognize her groundbreaking accomplishment, which permanently inscribed her into the annals of skiing.

The FIS Alpine World Cup Tour celebrated this momentous achievement on its official Facebook page. Fans of Mikaela Shiffrin, the American ski sensation who has made the entire nation proud today, lost no time in rushing to the comment area to offer their congratulations.

Similarly to the previous day’s race, Mikaela Shiffrin extended her lead in the first run by 0.69 seconds as she sped through the closely placed gates in the first run today. Rarely do you see skiers cruising down the same track without fighting through any obstacles. After the first run, only two other skiers were within a second of her, and Shiffrin skied aggressively enough in the second run to not only keep those skiers at bay but extend her advantage. She was too shocked to speak as she passed the finish line, but she immediately collapsed into the snow since she knew she had just broken a record that no future ski racer would be able to beat for quite some time.

But compared to the second-place finisher, Wendy Holdener of Switzerland, Shiffrin was a remarkable 0.92 seconds faster. She now has 13 victories on the season and is ready for more action on the ski scene. In the post that acknowledged the 87th World Cup win of Shiffrin, the caption reads, “The GREATEST of all time Mikaela Shiffrin.” She surely has made everybody in the country proud today!
