Equestrian sports demand not just expertise but also a high-quality horse and a training arena. Because of the expensive cost of horses and equestrian facilities, this activity is only accessible to those with deep pockets. Nonetheless, equestrian properties with a particularly rich history may fetch mind-boggling sums. This insane 214-acre equestrian estate in Westchester County, New York, was in a similar predicament a year ago.

The Wall Street Journal reported in 2022 that the Westchester County equestrian estate, Sunnyfield Farm, was on sale for a price of $65 million. Bedford, a quiet town approximately 35 miles north of New York City, has a long history of drawing the rich and famous, and back then, this home was the most expensive on the market.

History of this equestrian estate

According to Sandy Nielsen Baumann, the property owner, the Nielsen family breeds and raises thoroughbreds at Sunnyfield Farm. Sunnyfield Farm, she said, is one of the biggest privately held estates in the area. Baumann’s father bought the property at a foreclosure sale while she was in the sixth grade, back in 1976. Her father acquired the estate alongside three other families, but the Nielsens bought them out in the end. She and her three siblings spent almost every weekend at the farm growing up, where they learned to ride and compete in equestrian events.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the heiress to the A&P grocery store empire, Josephine McIntosh, had previously owned the property. The estate has also been included in Hollywood productions, such as Julia Roberts’ and Susan Sarandon’s “Stepmom” (1998). Since Baumann and her siblings live all over the nation and she spends most of the year in Colorado, the family has decided to sell the property since they no longer have frequent opportunities to utilize it.

What does the 214 acres of land have to offer?

There are many barns on the equestrian estate, with enough stalls to house over 70 horses. Almost a hundred acres of paddocks and a Grand Prix field are available. Both the Bedford Riding Lanes trail network and the nearby Guard Hill Preserve are adjacent to the property.

The rest of the well-kept property includes a lovely main home with four bedrooms, a guest cottage, and flats for the people who will live on the estate. Sunnyfield makes excellent use of its location, with its beautiful meadows, wooded areas, and two stream-fed ponds, all of which are sure to please both horse owners and enthusiasts.
