After a long losing skid in the NHL, the New York Rangers beat the Los Angeles Kings at Madison Square Garden. Despite the negative publicity caused by K’Andre Miller’s spitting on Kings defender Drew Doughty, the Rangers ultimately won the game. Even thinking about this scenario makes people uncomfortable, so naturally, it caused quite a stir in the hockey community. After the game, Doughty gave an interview in which he addressed this situation and was surprisingly open and forthright.

After the game, Drew Doughty was interviewed about the spitting incident in which he was involved, and the video was posted to the Glovey McGlovin YouTube channel. Simply put, the Kings’ defenseman was dissatisfied with what he saw from Rangers’ defenseman K’Andre Miller.

NHL star’s candid statement regarding this situation
Not since Garnet Hathaway spit in Erik Gudbranson’s face in 2019, have NHL spectators seen anything like this on the ice rink. The incident as a whole was more tumultuous than Miller and Doughty’s exchange, but the outcome was the same. The whole incident occurred amid a chaotic post-whistle scrum, that occurred around 16 minutes into the first period.
In the post-game interview, Drew Doughty talks about the incident, saying, “I was just shocked obviously, and then I don’t even know if I said anything to him after, but I just immediately went to the ref to try to get the penalty, but I mean, you don’t want to see things like that in this game.”

He also mentions how he hasn’t encountered such a situation in the league before and continues, “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that. I’m sure it has happened, but not that I’ve seen. Um yeah, it’s unfortunate and whether or not he meant to do it, I have no idea, but it’s pretty big movie on my face, so I was pretty pissed.”

The decision of the referee regarding this incident
Immediately after spitting on Los Angeles Kings defender Drew Doughty, New York Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller was given a match penalty and expelled from the match. Miller said after the game that he had a conversation with Doughty about the incident and that he did not want to cause any hardship. Miller, though, was banned from the rink for the rest of the game.

It was unfortunate that the match’s misbehavior occurred at such an inopportune time. As there were speculations that the New York Rangers might acquire Patrick Kane from the Chicago Blackhawks before the trade deadline, the Rangers have been playing with just five defensemen. The latter had to complete the last 44 minutes of the game with just four defensemen. Even though the Rangers were up against it, they were able to pull off a 5-2 win against the Kings.
