“Needed That One Badly”: New York’s Second Half of Season Begins With Nail-Biting OT Thriller and Fans Can’t Keep Calm

After a dull all-star weekend, the NHL has regained the faith of the ice hockey community at large. In tonight’s game, the New York Rangers faced off against the Calgary Flames in a struggle to the finish. While the intensity of the fight wasn’t enough to melt the ice, it was certainly enough to test the viewers’ patience for a tense finish.

The match saw the heat in the first period’s early minutes itself. Rangers center Filip Chytil opened the scoreboard with a calm goal in the sixth minute. In the 11th minute, Flames winger Blake Coleman tied the game by scoring a goal and leaving the goaltender and three Rangers’ defenders, all confused by his moves. Although a fight broke out between two defensemen in the first period as well. Christopher Tanev of the Flames collided with Jacob Trouba of the Rangers, and the resulting friction ignited a brawl.

Rangers‘ Filip Chytil scored his second goal of the game to give his team a 2-1 lead. Although the advantage held for a while, in the 37th minute, Flames’ right winger Tyler Toffoli tied the game. Rangers center Mika Zibanejad eventually scored a goal to break the tie. While the Flames continued to pick on Jacob Trouba in the second period, another brawl broke out.

Once again, the score was tied in the third period thanks to a fantastic goal by Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane. Michael Stone’s goal came just 5 minutes after the Flames’ third, and it marked the beginning of their dominance. Mika Zibanejad, of the Rangers, scored a tense equalizer that squeezed in between the legs of the Flames’ goalkeeper, sending him into a frenzy. A 4-4 deadlock meant extra time to decide a winner.

Every team scored an attempt in the extra period of the game. Alexis Lafrenière of the Rangers scored a fantastic goal with a great assist from Mika Zibanejad, who was attempting a hat trick, to demonstrate to the NHL why teamwork is the key to success. The game resulted in a Rangers victory, sending New York City hockey fans into a frenzy.
