The 2022–23 NHL season is still a way off. Intense trading, contracting, and, for some, retirement have taken all the steam off the system. Even though the 2022–23 season was the best one in Boston Bruins history, their playoff run was cut short by the Florida Panthers. All the Bruins’ players did a great job this year, but one of them won’t be returning for the next campaign. Bruins center Patrice Bergeron, 38, announced his retirement from the NHL last Tuesday.
There was widespread announcement of Bergeron’s retirement on social media, and the NHL itself acknowledged the news. However, as several commenters on the page attested, seeing a faithful Bruins player retire from the NHL left them feeling sentimental.

Patrice Bergeron has spent all 19 years of his National Hockey League career with the Boston Bruins and has made a fortune of $97,509,415. He had a promising start to his NHL career after being taken at No. 45 in the second round of the 2003 draft. For the 2022–23 season, Bergeron was selected as the League’s top defensive forward for the sixth time in his career, adding to his career totals of 1,040 points (427 goals, 613 assists). The talented center not only helped the Bruins win the 2011 Stanley Cup, but he also scored 50 goals and dished out 78 assists in 170 playoff games.

Recalling an experience from when he was “12 years old” immediately after the retirement declaration, he gave a great last performance. The Boston Bruins gave the 38-year-old NHL superstar his big break, allowing him to fulfill his lifelong goal of “to become a professional hockey player.” He elaborated that it “was not easy” for him to get where he is now, but that he “always remained strong” and overcame enormous obstacles to do so. He dedicated part of the statement to his devoted fan base, writing, “I have had the honor of playing in front of the best fans in the world wearing the Bruins uniform and representing my country at the highest levels of international play.” Furthermore, he understands that “this is the right time to step away from playing the game” he enjoys so much.
The Bruins’ stalwart center skates out into the sunset with his head held high, but he leaves behind a legacy that will live on in the hearts of hockey fans and on the ice of the NHL.
It wasn’t only the Boston Bruins fans that bid him farewell
The NHL was shocked by the news during the deals and the season break. The instant the NHL’s official Instagram account posted about this, the post was flooded with comments from fans.
We have a Toronto Maple Leafs fan in the comment section, as it read, “As a leafs fan, the best two way forward of the decade, possibly all time.” Despite an early playoff exit last season, this comment read, “Can’t hate Bergy, one hell of a career!”
