The Vancouver Canucks were having a terrible season in the NHL up until the all-star break in January. The fans were already upset with the management after they fired their beloved coach Bruce Boudreau and then traded away their captain Bo Horvat, who had been with the Canucks since the 2014–15 season. After the all-star break, though, Rick Tocchet has the squad doing well. The Canucks’ management recently sprung a massive surprise on the fans just before the March 3 trade deadline.

Earlier today, Canucks Hockey Insider announced on Facebook that the team had acquired defenseman Filip Hronek from the Detroit Red Wings. This deal was quite sudden and unexpected, and there were no rumors leading up to it, thus the Canucks’ fan base was caught off guard.

What can the Canucks fan expect from this NHL star?

The Detroit Red Wings selected Filip Hronek in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. On the other hand, he just started playing in the NHL in the 2018–19 season. Hronek was a critical member of the Red Wings’ defense, and his arrival to the Vancouver Canucks’ roster couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Vancouver Canucks’ general manager, Patrik Allvin, has been on record as saying the team wants to draft a right-handed defenseman. No one, however, anticipated that the Canucks would pull off a massive trade so close to the March 3rd deadline. Neither side of this transaction makes much sense; the Red Wings have just given away their best defender for the season, and the Canucks, who are revamping, have given up two draft choices. Vancouver Canucks supporters were left scratching their heads when the team’s official statement on the deal was tweeted to Twitter and then re-posted on Facebook by the Canucks Hockey Insider.

The hockey world was divided in the comment section

In the post’s comments area, fans from all around the globe voiced their thoughts on the transfer. Some fans of the team are praising the Canucks’ management, while others are quite dissatisfied. Here are some comments to prove it.

It looks like this fan is just not happy with the team’s decision as they say, “Oh wow a guy who’s a freaking -87 in 5 seasons…… Screw this team, what happened to rebuilding?”

Out of all the doubtful fans, here is another comment by a dissatisfied Canucks fan that reads, “Greeeeeaaaat this should really help us be a middling team next year. I need to just stop watching hockey or find a new team.”

However, out of all the hatred, this fan looks at this trade as a good start for the team’s self-rebuilding, saying, “This is the right move for Canucks everyone complaining Canucks needed a right hand dman ….plus8 with 38 points cant go wrong gotta give something up to get someone in return … huge bonus for Canucks… Canucks fans just wait until he plays solid dman Hughes has his partner ship for the long run .. there more to come.”

Another Canucks supporter also approves this trade as a good decision, saying, “Actually he is a very good defenseman. And he is exactly the age they are trying to build around. Hard to say horrible trade when you don’t know what draft picks were going to turn out like.and a rare right handed defenseman. Let’s see how this plays out.”
