“That’s How the NHL Works”: Wayne Gretzky Reveals Unwritten Bylaw About the National Hockey League

There are legends in every sport who have won several titles and rising stars who will be the talk of the town in a few years. The sport of ice hockey is no exception; every few decades, a new crop of superstars emerges. Wayne Gretzky was one of those people who was well-known to hockey fans and beyond. Gretzky has had a tremendous twenty-year career in the NHL, and he observes a consistent trend inside the league.

Wayne Gretzky posted an interview he had with the NHL on TNT on his Instagram. Gretzky, using examples from NHL legends and rising stars, discusses an unwritten rule followed by the sport for many years in the video.

The Great One kicks off the video by discussing the sport’s greatest players of all time. He talks about several great hockey players, including Gordie Howe, Jean Béliveau, and many more. The White Tornado alludes to an “unwritten bylaw” in ice hockey that has been passed down from generation to generation. The NHL is a “privilege” to play in, he adds. The veteran also emphasized the players’ selfless service to the community, which benefits not only their team and fans but also the younger players who will take to the ice in the future.

The Great One mentions Russian ice hockey great and Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin, who won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 2018. To further make his point, he mentions Sidney Crosby, the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins and a Canadian ice hockey superstar who has won the Stanley Cup three times in his career (in 2009, 2016, and 2017). He elaborates on how generational talent is passed down and how they, in turn, teach it to today’s stars like Mitch Marner, Connor McDavid, and many more. Gretzky elaborates on the role these veteran players will have in the NHL’s future success by mentioning rising stars like Connor Bedard. At the conclusion of the clip, Gretzky summarizes the history of hockey by declaring, “That’s how the NHL works.”

The NHL entry draft is closely followed by all of the league’s top teams and legendary players. Therefore, it is a tremendous honor to be regarded as the league’s top prospect. Connor Bedard is one player whose name has been heard a lot lately due to his meteoric rise in the sport of ice hockey.

In the 2017–18 season, the Canadian prospect made his debut with the North Vancouver Storm U15 A1. While playing for the West Van Academy Bantam Prep in the 2018–2019 season, he showed the world his abilities by scoring 64 goals and adding 24 assists in 30 games. However, the teenager shot to fame when he debuted in the Western Hockey League with the Regina Pats. His 71 goals and 72 assists in only 57 games this season have propelled him to team captain. As a result, he is now one of the best prospects in the NHL and the leading scorer in the WHL.
