“A Warrior’s Death”: Nazare Costs Surfing Community Majorly as Fans Come Together in Mourning the Unfortunate Demise of Brazilian Legend

The new year brings difficult news for the surfing community. Big wave surfing which is the most dangerous surfing category has taken one more life and shaken fans. This time it is the Brazilian big wave surfing sensation, who was also known for his surfing talent in some of the most dangerous waves in the world.

Marcio Freire previously faced a wipeout during the JAWS event in 2015. He also made the 2015 Wipeout of the Year list. However, this time the wipeout at Nazaré took his life. The 47-year-old was trying to get a hang of the world’s most dangerous waves. But this adventure turned into a nightmare when he slipped from his surfboard and fell upside down directly into the ocean.

Fans reacting to the death of the surfing icon

Most of the fans left a ‘rest in peace’ comment, although this fan honors him with, “Sad, but dying while doing what he loved isn’t so tragic. It’s bitter sweet. Personally, I’ve prioritized who I love most over what I love most and have toned down what I’m willing to chase. Stoke is still high. Rest easy, charger.” Another fan mourned, saying, “This is indeed very sad news. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. RIP Marcio Freire.”

Another fan left a comment that, raised caution about the big waves – “Im so sorry to hear this has happened. While aware surfing Nazare is very dangerous and a known hazard, it doesnt make it any easier to lose a life. Prayers for friends and family of this brave man.” 

The surfing community has been devastated by the news, and most of the comments show them offering their condolences. Here are a few.

“So sad. What a terrible tragedy.”

“As tragic as it is, when you go doing what you love and living life to its fullest, it takes a little bit of the sadness away!”

“Very sorry to hear this sad news. Condolences to his Family and loved ones. And to the Surf world.”
