World champions aren’t always crowned on the WSL surfing stage; novices are also given a chance to shine. There are some formidable surfers on this list who are considered the underdogs of the sport because of their infrequent participation in WSL competitions. The world’s best surfers will soon be converging on Teahupo’o, Tahiti, French Polynesia, for the Tahiti Pro. The WSL staged the Outerknown Tahiti Pro Trials to select wild card surfers as the Championship Tour nears its conclusion. The surfer did a victory sign as the barrel finished, raising both fists in the air. Despite his loss, Czermak was given a 10 on his final ride because of his terrific performance.
