The only American to compete at one of the biggest surfing stages
Griffin Colapinto is the only American surfer to have qualified for the CT of the WSL’s Lower Trestles event this year. It’s a big deal for the surfing community in the United States, and it might be a big deal for the surfer himself to win a WSL world title. Kelly Slater was the last American male surfer to win the WSL world championship in 2011, so Colapinto’s victory is a major milestone for his country, which has been dominated by Brazilian surfers lately.
Colapinto’s recent Instagram video, in which he documents his surfing preparation for the Rip Curl Finals, has gone viral as surf fans across the globe witness the world no. 2 do multiple maneuvers on the waves. The clip opens with him dodging barrels, choosing other routes, and ultimately succeeding without a single misstep. Because his maneuvers are so surprising, the surfer was able to change what seemed to be an aerial into a cutback. On his next attempt, he does a flawless 360-degree aerial off the wave. At the conclusion of the clip, the surfer showed off a variety of cutbacks, demonstrating his readiness to compete in the finals under various wave conditions.

There will be fewer surfing fights at Lower Trestles than at past events, but each one will include the top five male and female surfers. Fans won’t have to wait long, as the WSL will give the event the go-ahead as soon as the waves are suitable.
