Those who engage in the sport of surfing face the pleasures and perils of the ocean’s waves head-on. Kitesurfing is one of several variations of this sport. To kiteboard or kitesurf is to use a big power kite, and the force of the wind to propel a rider over water, land, or snow. In this activity, elements of paragliding, surfing, windsurfing, skating, snowboarding, and wakeboarding are all merged into one. Kite-surfing is an exciting hobby, but it can also result in serious injuries, such as the ones this Youtube star sustained after he fell into the water after losing control of his kite.

Michael Mac Donald, a professional kite-surfer who also goes by ‘Mike’ recently posted a video on YouTube in which he discusses an injury he had, following an accident, while attempting a kite-surfing technique.

How bad the injury was for the kite-surfing sensation?

The boogie loop is a popular kite-surfing stunt among aficionados. A kite surfer does the feat by spinning as many times as they want in the air, before landing safely onto the waves. It includes turning the surfboard, and jumping into the air with the aid of the kite. When the kite-surfer climbs higher into the air, the pressure on their body increases, making what seems like a simple feat rather challenging.

In his YouTube video, Mike talks about his injury while he was attempting another boogie loop, as he always does, saying, “So I’ve got to say I have been going through the wars lately. I crashed the Boogie Loop which is a trick I’ve probably performed a thousand five hundred times, and I fractured my T3 vertebra in my back.” While carrying out the trick, Mike suffered a T3 vertebra injury and he further explains it, saying, “It’s a compression fracture, and I have 23 vertebral height loss. I also have probable hairline fractures to my ribs and a bruised lung; well, I had it and now thankfully that’s gone.”

What is a T3 vertebra injury?

There are 12 vertebrae that make up the thoracic spine, and they are labeled T1 through T12. Located between the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine, it serves as the body’s structural and functional hub. The thoracic spine consists of 12 vertebrae that attach directly to the rib cage.

T3 is the third cervical vertebra down the spine, between T2 and T4. The T3 vertebra acts as a master switch for the chest muscles and, subsequently, the lungs and bronchial tubes. Following any T3 vertebra injury, symptoms include difficulty breathing, asthma, cough, and illnesses including bronchitis, influenza, and pneumonia. The severity of the injury and the patient’s survival depends on the extent of the spinal cord damage.
