For many surfers, the 2023 World Surf League season was full of highs and lows. A number of well-known surfers have unexpectedly dropped out of the competition early, while an underdog has won a major event. A lot has transpired, and it has nothing to do with riding the waves; rather, it has everything to do with what goes on behind the scenes. But despite all the intense activity, there are just a few controversies that have emerged, like the scoring dispute from the Surf Ranch Pro, which is still prevalent and reappears whenever fans discuss it.

The WSL announced the “#WSLFinal5!” on their official Instagram account. Filipe Toledo tops the men’s CT with a tremendous score of 58,300, having won three tournaments and been on the podium many times this year. Griffin Colapinto is now second in the men’s CT with a score of 50,860, surpassing Ethan Ewing, who had an injury during Tahiti Pro practice. Joao Chianca and Jack Robinson come after them. Carissa Moore and Tyler Wright, who are ranked first and second in the women’s CT, respectively, have raced to a tight finish. Since Caroline Marks won the Tahiti Pro, she has moved up to number three. As the last two competitors in the forthcoming Rip Curl Finals, Molly Picklum and Caitlin Simmers are rated fourth and fifth, respectively.

Every time there is a WSL tournament, a top 5 list is published. The list has been revised for the last time, but its announcement was met with mixed feelings among surfers.

The surfing community was left divided

Not everyone in the surfing community was pleased with the revised list, as is always the case. As soon as this list went live on WSL’s Instagram, debates over controversies from all around the globe began in the comments.

One fan just hates this scoring format, as they say, “Make the WSL great again.. the format sucks.” Another fan also requested a format change, as they say, “Ethan will be injured and you’ll only have 4 surfers. What if all 5 surfers were injured, you wouldn’t have a final? Please stop with this nonsense format and make the WSL tour great again, and while you’re at it, add the same amount of lefts as rights to the tour…”

There were also a few suggestions left for WSL, as this comment read, “If Ethan can’t compete, move #6 to #5 and move the others up for the FINAL 5.” Another fan commented, saying, “Format doesn’t have everyone’s favorite surfers because it favors the BEST surfers on the tour, Love the format really makes sure the best of the best have a shot at the title.”
