Gabriel Medina, a Brazilian professional surfer, is well-known in the surfing world. This has not been an easy journey for the three-time World Surf League (WSL) champion since his last global title in 2021. Due to unforeseen personal circumstances, Medina had to withdraw from the first part of the 2022 Championship Tour. However, his comeback in the middle of the season didn’t last long. Medina was forced to sit out the 2022 World Championship because of an injury he sustained in Brazil. The 29-year-old surfer, though, never lost hope, as seen by his continued pursuit of the championship title this year.

Gabriel Medina is back on the scene after a disappointing 2022 season, capping it off with a victory in the 2023 Margaret River Pro in Western Australia. The latest victory showed that the three-time champion is still in contention for the global title. The World Surf League posted the story on Facebook, where it quickly gained widespread attention.

The Brazilian surfing superstar had a rocky start to the 2023 season. Due to his early elimination from prior competitions, Gabriel Medina had no option but to participate. Medina didn’t allow a string of misfortunes to drive him into a tailspin. Initially, he was overshadowed by the legendary John John Florence, but he was the one who advanced to the finals. Griffin Colapinto, a surfer from the United States, was his rival in the final round of the championship.

Colapinto opened the 2023 Margaret River Pro’s last day with a solid wave and an 8. In the heat, Medina scored an 8 and a 9.50. Because of this, Colapinto needed a nine-point run to win the game. Medina led the finals and took home his 17th championship tour triumph, as Colapinto couldn’t get enough points to catch up. This victory did show the surfing world that the Brazilian is seeking to reclaim the number one spot. After this victory, Medina moved up to seventh place with 19,960 points for the season.

The surfing world went crazy

The WSL recognized Gabriel Medina’s tournament victory by congratulating the star on their Facebook page. The surfer’s devoted following didn’t wait long either to rush the comments section and offer their congratulations.
