On March 6, Kaylanne Timoteo Freitas was brutally attacked by a shark on Piedade Beach in Brazil. The predator grabbed her stomach as she swam away from the shore. She attempted to attack the predator, but it bit her again, ripping off part of her left arm just below the elbow. Kaylanne, stunned by the horrible reality of her worst dread, wondered whether what had happened was real or if someone was simply playing a prank on her. During her interview with local media, she talked about this horrible experience as reported by Daily Star, saying, “No one respected me at the time. I understand that it’s something that everyone wants to record, to show what’s happening. But at the time, I wasn’t thinking about that. I just thought I was going to lose my arm for the rest of my life. During the attack, there were people filming instead of helping, aside from the comments. That’s what killed me inside.” Disgusted, she observed as just a few courageous people helped her in her life-or-death predicament while the others stood by and watched.
