At the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, the Italian sprinter squared up against American runner Fred Kerley in the 100m dash, winning a gold medal, while Kerley settled for silver. The duo have not faced off since. Fans were hoping to see a rematch between the two in the Rabat Diamond League held this month, but Jacobs withdrew from the tournament so he could focus on recovery from a lumbosacral injury. This came as a great surprise, considering Jacobs missed a lot of the 2022 season’s competitions and even bowed out of the world championships.
