Is “success” really the right word to describe the September window for the U.S. men’s national team? At first, fans and pundits were stunned when Mauricio Pochettino named a controversial roster — leaving out key players while still calling up new faces — with less than nine months to go before the 2026 World Cup. The campaign began with a 0-2 defeat to South Korea, which felt like a breaking point for many. Yet the American boys managed to steady things with a surprising 2-0 win over Japan. So, as this bittersweet window ended, one question remains: does Pochettino have any clarity on the final World Cup squad?

Well, to say that the Argentinian tactician already has full clarity on who will return home next summer to play in the prestigious tournament would be somewhat diabolical — especially for the 20-plus players fighting for a spot. Still, the USMNT boss seems to have a measure of confidence about who can make the cut for the final roster. And one of those names is Alex Zendejas.

The 27-year-old, who broke the deadlock inside the opening half-hour with a perfectly timed volley, certainly caught Mauricio Pochettino’s attention. No wonder in the post-game presser, the 53-year-old somewhat hinted that Zendajas can make the final roster. “I think we are so pleased. With this type of performance, he’s in the race for the roster of the World Cup,” said the former Chelsea boss.

You hear that, Zendejas? Looks like someone is impressed. And why wouldn’t it be the case, considering the El Paso, Texas-born midfielder bounced back in his own fashion. Even though Alex has earned 13 caps with the USMNT so far and scored two goals, this was his first call-up to the national team in 2025. Before this, he was involved with Pochettino’s team last year at the beginning of the first four games.

Even though the former PSG and Tottenham boss held Zendejas in high regard, calling him an “interesting player,” he was still questioned over his decision to omit the Club America star from the Nations League as well as the Gold Cup. To which Mauricio responded by adding that it wasn’t a decision made over quality but rather due to the circumstances.

Not to mention that Zendejas had domestic commitments, leading his side in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, something that Poch hadn’t expected the Liga MX side would qualify for the tournament. Further raising the bar of praise for the midfielder, the former Espanyol coach and player added, “We value him a lot. He’s a player who can operate in different positions, links up well, and has a very good chemistry with the group.”

So, for him to wear the red, blue, and white again after last appearing in November 2024 during the Nations League quarterfinals against Jamaica — and to score just his second goal after first finding the net in 2023 — made it a truly special moment. No wonder it also earned him praise from the team’s skipper.

USMNT skipper also echoes Mauricio Pochettino’s praise

After scoring the opener for the USMNT against Japan, Alex Zendejas called himself “lucky” that he was able to connect a perfect cross from Max Arfsten. But at least his skipper, Christian Pulisic, knows that he was able to do it because of the obvious talent he possesses. “I’ve played with him since we were 14 years old, so I’ve always known what a great player he is,” said the AC Milan forward after the game.

“He really showed this camp something different, so I’m really happy for him. He deserves it,” added Mr. Captain America, further describing Zendejas as a really technical player, clean on the ball, and someone who brings a little something different. He also highlighted Zendejas’ direct style, speed, vision for the final pass, and the overall impact he has on the team.

A nod of approval from not just head coach Mauricio Pochettino but also from fellow teammate and skipper Christian Pulisic? Boy, is Alex Zendejas the chosen one. Fingers crossed that not only does he make the cut in the World Cup roster, but also shines the way he is expected to.
