“How lucky are we…” Kristie Mewis wrote in an Instagram post that she shared a couple of pictures with her fiancée, Sam Kerr. Love has only grown stronger between the soccer couple since they got together in 2020, with Mewis even stepping into the role of a mom to their child today. Yet, alongside the sweet moments also come the unexpected ones – like anger, playful teasing, or banter, which sometimes end up going a little too far. And in this case, Mewis’s words struck when Kerr was going through one of the toughest spells of her career.

Wait, wasn’t it the other way around? Because, as far as most USWNT fans remember, it seemed like Sam Kerr was the one playfully taking a sly dig at her partner. To even recall, right after the 2022/23 season wrapped up, the Australian forward visited the States to meet her then-girlfriend, where Kerr couldn’t resist poking fun at Gotham FC’s struggles that season, joking: “Do you know you guys have conceded eight goals this year, four off set-pieces? Corners to be exact. That’s horrific.”
But this was nothing compared to what Kristie did. This interesting revelation was made on the latest episode of The Women’s Game podcast, hosted by, yep, none other than Sam Mewis, the sister of Kristie. “I want to bring this up in your podcast because all the USA fans get at me because I’m harsh about this corner thing. Your sister is the harshest person ever in the world to me. She doesn’t do it in public,” began the 32-year-old.

Kerr recalled when she struggled at Chelsea and felt completely “down in the dumpster,” even facing comments like, “This girl’s overrated, this girl’s a waste of money…” In one game, Chelsea won the match, but on an individual level, the Matildas veteran had seven one-on-ones and missed them all. And instead of giving moral support to her partner, Kristie delivered a harsh comment without fully realizing the situation.
“I come back to my phone, and your sister had sent me a text. ‘You meant to kick it in the net.’ And I’m like, [surprised reaction] ‘I don’t know if I like this girl anymore’. And I was getting absolutely demolished by everyone, and she says you’re meant to kick it in the net,” revealed Kerr, leaving Sam Mewis speechless and even going side split.

This revelation only saw the younger sister offer a clarification on behalf of her elder one, saying, “Agh, Kris [Seemingly unbelievable]…She’s tough. She’s a lot of tough love. Kristie is pretty notorious for tough love, I’d say..” Sam Kerr agreed, stating that this is indeed the nature of her partner and Sam’s sister. It probably could be how Kristie bonds with everyone, including Sam, by giving tough love.
Be that as it may, this is quite a shocking and never-before-heard revelation from the former Perth Glory and Sydney FC forward. Then again, to be fair, it was actually Mewis who started this cheeky dig competition – something she had even normalized!
Sam Kerr brought this upon herself!
Technically, Sam Kerr should have seen it coming. While she had given her own criticism to Kristie Mewis, it was relatively constructive. The Matildas star had even pointed out that Mewis could have done better at the front post, noting that if she had jumped higher, the ball wouldn’t have reached the middle of the goal. It’s all fun and games; Kristie’s message was pure banter.
To ring any bells, back when the USWNT’s 2023 World Cup Netflix documentary ‘Under Pressure’ was launched, the Australian star confidently told the camera, “We’re both so supportive of each other but also so hard on each other.” The couple also revealed that their relationship provides mutual support off the pitch.

The Matildas forward explained about dating a fellow soccer star: “I think it drives us. We’re both so competitive, but then we have our support. Some days I’ll come out of a game, she’ll come out of a game, and we’ll just say we don’t want to talk about soccer.”
So one can consider it a kind of full-circle moment. Either way, share your views in the comments.
