With a tally of 91 goals, Lionel Messi set the record for the most goals scored in a single calendar year back in 2012. Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals in men’s international soccer, with 136 to his name. We’re sure you’ve heard of these seemingly unbreakable records set by some of the most iconic stars in the beautiful game. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg—there are countless other feats recognized not only within the sport but also on the global stage by none other than the Guinness World Records. And now, joining those prestigious ranks is yet another entry—this time by a 31-year-old star from Michele Kang’s London City Lionesses.
The protagonist goes by the name of Megan Campbell. It was just days ago that she, along with her teammates, celebrated their promotion to England’s top-tier division, Women’s Super League (WSL) after winning the WSL Championship title. Now, today, Campbell has another reason to pop champagne. She was able to etch her name in the history of Guinness World Records.
Sure, many of you may know this Irish international not just for her rock-solid defending, but also for her infamous long throws during matches. Fittingly, it’s that very skill that has now turned her into a global sensation. Get your congratulations ready—Megan Campbell has officially set the Guinness World Record for the longest football throw-in (female). The monumental feat was achieved at the London City Lionesses’ training ground in Kent, UK, on April 30th.

The veteran accomplished the feat with an incredible throw of 37.55 meters, or 123 feet and 2 inches. In fact, she’s the first woman to ever break this record, surpassing the minimum benchmark of 35 meters, or 114 feet and 9 inches. To make you understand the gravity of this record, Campbell’s throw in was 10 meters longer than the length of a typical blue whale—also called the world’s largest animal with a measurement of 24 m or 80 feet.

If that doesn’t feel relatable, consider this: the distance of the Irish center back’s throw-in is nearly twice the length of a standard bowling alley, which measures 19.16 meters, or 62 feet 10 inches, from the pins to the foul line. Even though a mannequin was placed at the 35-meter mark, with Megan initially planning to hit it, the Drogheda native ended up throwing the ball even further.
Consider the former Manchester City, Liverpool, and Everton star a master of her craft. It’s almost as if she has managed to make her signature move. To recall, back in 2014, Campbell once notched two assists from—yes, you guessed it right—throw-ins during an international game between the Republic of Ireland and Germany, even though her team lost 3-2.
In fact, there have been many other games where the London City Lionesses star has delivered such long throw-ins. However, a formal recognition had been long overdue—until now, as the soccer world finally acknowledged her Guinness World Record feat. Yet, Campbell surprisingly believes this achievement won’t stand for long!

The achievement is something Megan Campbell can surely boast about for the rest of her life. Then again, she seems least interested in staying on cloud nine. “I think my record might stand for about a week until someone gets hold of the information,” she chuckled while speaking to Guinness World Record, before finally taking some credit.
“It’s an amazing achievement for me personally to have that now, as the first ever. But ultimately you want someone to beat you, I want someone to be more successful than me because then that means I’ve put another player in a better place,” added the Irish defender, while insisting on becoming a leading example for others.

Campbell believes it’s her hypermobility that allows her to make such long throw-ins with ease. And the signs were there early—at just 12 or 13 years old, she was already standing out while playing for, guess who? The boys’ team! “I was playing for a boys’ team back home and my throw was longer than the boys’,” she recalled.

The granddaughter of Eamonn Campbell—the lead guitarist of the legendary Dublin-based band The Dubliners—insisted she never had to specifically train to improve her long throw. It was simply something she always had. “It’s something nice to have in the back pocket when needed,” she added, appreciating her standout skill.
But more importantly, by breaking the record, Megan Campbell hopes she’s sent out an important message: “There are no barriers” and “Anything is achievable in life, no matter what it is.” And honestly, we couldn’t agree more!
