The next few years are set to be quite crucial for the United States. Having already completed major hosting duties earlier this year with the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the trend is set to continue with the 2026 World Cup and even the 2028 LA Olympics. As if that wasn’t enough to showcase their growing dominance in the global sporting arena, the U.S. had earlier expressed interest in hosting the 2031 Women’s World Cup. Now, to further cement their chances of winning the bid, U.S. Soccer has decided to make things even more interesting by announcing a potential history-making move.

One already sees them set to host the upcoming summer men’s World Cup tournament alongside Mexico and Canada, marking the first-ever multi-nation event of its kind. Now, in an effort to make similar rallying strides, U.S. Soccer is reportedly looking to include not two but three additional nations, Mexico, Jamaica, and Costa Rica, in its bid to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

Just like the prestigious 2026 men’s tournament, the 2031 women’s edition will also feature an expanded 48-team setup, up from the original 32, following the FIFA Council’s unanimous approval in May. If the bid is ultimately selected, it would mark the largest Women’s World Cup in history. “We’re incredibly proud to be leading this bid for the 2031 Women’s World Cup alongside our Concacaf partners in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica,” U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement compiled by ESPN.

“Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to host the biggest and most impactful Women’s World Cup in history, one that will inspire a new generation of fans and help grow the women’s game across our entire region and around the world. We’re excited to drive lasting progress for women’s soccer by creating a legacy that reaches far beyond 2031 and sets a new global standard for the sport,” the statement added.

Interestingly, the U.S.-led joint bid for the 2031 Women’s World Cup currently faces no competition. Then again, FIFA is expected to officially confirm it during the Congress in Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 30 next year. Back in April, U.S. Soccer mentioned that it was waiting for FIFA to determine the tournament’s size before revealing its “partnership structure” with other Concacaf nations.

An approval for the 2031 edition would mean the Americans will host the Women’s World Cup for the third time, after previously doing so in 1999 and 2003. This would make them the nation to host the tournament more than any other, surpassing China, which staged the inaugural event in 1991 and again in 2007.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s participation in the joint bid will mark a historic moment, as it would be the first Caribbean nation to host a senior World Cup match. Currently ranked No. 40 in the world, Jamaica’s women’s team reached the round of 16 at the 2023 World Cup. Mexico, ranked 29th, missed qualification for that tournament, while Costa Rica, sitting at No. 43, also remains in the mix.

Jamaica Football Federation President Michael Ricketts called the opportunity monumental, stating that hosting World Cup matches would be “absolutely tremendous” for the country. He expressed confidence that Jamaica could deliver a memorable experience for both players and fans, describing it as a proud moment for the nation.

Initially, the United States and Mexico had shown interest in co-hosting the 2027 Women’s World Cup. However, they are now focusing on the 2031 bid, seeing the Brazil to stage the 2027 edition instead. This would see the tournament make its first-ever appearance in South America.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is expected to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup, at least, that’s what FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed, noting that England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland submitted the only valid bid. Then again, for now, focus remains on the U.S. Soccer potentially securing the rights. And for that to happen, they are aiming for greatness!

U.S. Soccer looks forward to fulfill big promises for the 2031 World Cup

Given how the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand generated a revenue of $570 million, Gianni Infantino has set an ambitious goal of generating $1 billion. In response, the U.S. Soccer announced earlier this week that it expects the 2031 Women’s World Cup to attract around 4.5 million fans across all four participating host nations. So that would only result in Infantino’s wish potentially coming true.

U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone shared that over 30 cities across the nation have shown interest in hosting matches for the 2031 tournament, which will feature 104 games. However, venue decisions aren’t expected before 2027. Even so, one knows how much of the United States’ strong commercial appeal lures FIFA to prefer hosting major tournaments. They shall maintain caution, especially with the ticket prices.

Not to mention, they’re already facing a lot of criticism for the 2026 men’s edition, where the prices are as steep as up to $6,730! Regardless, let’s see what does the 2031 women’s World Cup will bring for its fans.
