The 2024–25 FA Women’s Cup final was an absolute blast. Chelsea crushed Manchester United 3–0 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, denying them the chance to defend last year’s title and clinching their sixth trophy. Beyond fans, joining in the celebrations was the club’s recent ownership addition, Alexis Ohanian, who watched the victory alongside his superstar wife, Serena Williams, and their kids. But who would’ve thought that even with this association, the tennis icon would show support for her husband’s team’s arch-rivals?
Wait, how did we come to this? To set the scene, while Sonia Bompastor’s side couldn’t have found enough ways already to celebrate the title that helped them complete their domestic treble, it was a rather gloomy atmosphere in the other team’s locker room. Following the defeat, it was obvious for United stars to burst onto the scene, with one of them being their star goalie Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
In the meantime, Serena Williams had come to visit the United’s dressing room, where a moment saw her console an emotional USWNT goalkeeper, who couldn’t stop shedding tears. But the 39 Grand Slam title holder tried to calm down the fellow American. Interestingly, this heartwarming moment was caught on camera and quickly became viral.

Of course, many might call it a classic “game-recognizes-game” moment. However, others may find it odd that Serena Williams would show support for a team that rivals her husband’s. Addressing the moment, the four-time Olympic gold medalist replied to the video on X with a retweet, saying, “I wear Chelsea blue but pro-woman on my heart. Any color goes.”

Bold as always, simply Serena Williams for you, ladies and gentlemen. This is exactly the kind of moment that often makes the sport stand out from the ordinary. Even though the 4x Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year is now donning blue colors, she doesn’t mind being there for WSL rivals.
Though one can say the tennis icon specifically went for Phallon Tullis-Joyce, other United stars must have also gained the latter’s consoling words and affection. The talking point is that Williams is one pure-hearted soul who surely made all the internet’s day quite wholesome with this gesture, even though it came with an explanation.
As for her Chelsea association, consider that just as Ohanian is invested in the 2024-25 WSL champions, aside from a 10% stake for about 20 million pounds ($26.5 million)—so is the former tennis maestro. In fact, one should be grateful to Williams that we were able to see her husband make such an investment.
What’s your perspective on:
Does Serena Williams' support for a rival team redefine sports loyalty, or is it just good sportsmanship?

Chelsea should thank Serena Williams for Alexis Ohanian’s investment!
“Serena Williams is the prototype for how you can show women’s sports is and can be and should be on the same level as men’s,” long ago but not so much, this is how Alexis Ohanian explained his investment in women’s sports during a chat with CNBC. After co-founding and splurging millions to establish the National Women’s Soccer League side Angel City alongside Natalie Portman, Julie Uhrman, and Kara Nortman, who would have thought the Reddit owner would increase his soccer portfolio?

Alexis Ohanian and wife Serena Williams arrive at the 10th Annual LACMA Art + Film Gala 2021 held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on November 6, 2021 in Los Angeles, California, United States.
Well, part of the thanks goes to him selling his part of an investment to Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife Willow Bay, which pushed ACFC’s valuation to a whopping $250 million. No wonder that led the American entrepreneur to proudly announce his Chelsea involvement by saying, “I’ve bet big on women’s sports before—and I’m doing it again.”

The end result? The valuation of the Blues’ women’s team has already risen to £200 million, or roughly $265 million. Even Serena couldn’t contain her excitement, proudly giving a shoutout to her husband, saying, “ANOTHER ONE FOR @776FUND AND @ALEXISOHANIAN.”
Rest, we can’t wait to see how things unfold for Serena Williams and her husband on their time moving forward with Chelsea. Just like Alexis Ohanian said, “The sky is the limit.”
