When you hear Nebraska volleyball, you can almost envision a finely oiled machine that is the stuff of nightmares for all of its opponents. Despite not winning the NCAA title since 2017, the Huskers have firmly established themselves as one of the top destinations in the country for rising stars. In that light, it’s not surprising to see aspiring volleyball athletes from the US and beyond hoping to find their way to Lincoln to continue sharpening their skills.

Many of the last five singings by ex-head coach John Cook for Nebraska volleyball noted that they had a long dream of playing for the Huskers one day. With the chance to play for the Big Red knocking on their doors, the athletes couldn’t have been happier. ” She was 12 or 13 years old and she’s always wanted to be a Husker,” Cook had said about Campbell Flynn, who is playing her freshman year this season. Enough to underscore the high status Nebraska holds within the volleyball community. But the fandom also seems to have reached the US’s distant Southern relatives, too!
A post by Lincoln Arneal on X from September 27 shares how Dani Busboom Kelly might be looking to find her next signing for Nebraska volleyball from Puerto Rico. “Dani Busboom Kelly was talking to 2027 prospect Decelise Champión before NU’s match with Maryland,” the social media update reveals. So, who is this star you’ve not heard of before, but DBK seems to have her eyes on, you might wonder? Well, Arneal explains why the head coach feels the teenager could be a massive addition to the Huskers’ roster.

“The 16-year-old opposite from Puerto Rico has already played in senior national team tournaments,” the Nebraska insider elaborated in his X post. In the accompanying image, Dani and Decelise can be seen sharing a conversation courtside, while the latter visibly enjoys the seasoned coach’s company. However, Champión’s resume isn’t limited to debuting for her country at the mere age of 14. The opposite hitter is the first Puerto Rican to sign with a youth club in Italy, where she plays for Volleyro Casal de Pazzi.

As per Volleyball World records, Champión averages 16.71 points per match and boasts a 40.95% attacking efficiency. Quite the numbers. Safe to say, the Puerto Rican’s talents will be utilized well should she decide to try her luck at the Nebraska volleyball program. But while the teen might be pondering her options (she took a trip to Wisconsin the day before her meet-up with Dani), Busboom Kelly’s squad is making quite the case for itself.
The Huskers are sitting on a comfortable 12-0 overall record. With Cook’s departure in January, many Nebraska volleyball fans were anxious to see if the new management could carry on the legendary coach’s baton. So far, Busboom Kelly, an alum of the Lincoln school and a national champion under Coach Cook herself, has proved she’s perfectly capable and then some! On the day Decelise decided to soak in the atmosphere of the “Bob”, she saw Nebraska sweep Maryland 3-0.
But despite witnessing the carnage, it’s only logical for the Puerto Rican to keep her avenues open so she can make the best choice for her career. But there could be something that could help her fasten up her final decision.
DBK can assure the potential Nebraska volleyball recruit a beefy roster
In case Decelise ultimately decides to sign for the Huskers, she will join an incredible set of athletes in the Class of 2027. During her short time as the Nebraska volleyball boss, Busboom Kelly has already been working behind the scenes. After convincing Kenna Cogill to decommit from Oregon and play for her team, DBK landed several commits. 6-foot-4 middle blocker Kendall Omoruyi has already committed to Nebraska for 2027, while middle blocker Keoni Williams and opposite Jayden Robinson are set to join the team in 2026.

Moreover, Kelly is looking to make volleyball a family affair for Nebraska’s current athletes. In June, news came forward that the head coach had gotten word from Malorie Boesiger, sister of Maisie Boesiger, who currently shoulders libero duties for the Huskers, that the latter would start her Big Red career in 2027. It was an emotional moment for the siblings, and Maisie’s post, showing how her younger sister reacted to the news, went viral on social media.

Just a few weeks ago, Kelly was pleasantly surprised to learn that fans from Colombia underwent a 3-thousand-mile-long journey just to see the Nebraska volleyball stars in action against Stanford at the AVCA First Serve Showcase. And now, with Decelise’s possibilities, it seems like the Latin American countries could supply more than just diehard fans for DBK & Co. Quite the time to be a Nebraska volleyball fan, huh?
