Back in December 2024, Nebraska and Penn State fought tooth and nail for a spot in the national championships. However, the Cornhuskers women’s team lost to the Nittany Lions, 3-2, in a dramatic fashion. Still, Huskers’ head coach Dani Busboom Kelly applauded the team and said, “I think it’s a team that’s fallen short of their own expectations for two years in a row, so their goals are pretty strong, and in your face — in a good way.” Taking over the reins from the legendary John Cook was never going to be easy. But Busboom Kelly knew exactly what she was stepping into. With a legacy to uphold and a fanbase hungry for a national title, she embraced the challenge head-on.

And while the program has enjoyed consistent success, it’s the bitter memories of 2024 NCAA semifinals that the Huskers endured. Especially the painful loss to Penn State that continues to fuel the fire within this group. That defeat still lingers in the minds of the Cornhuskers.

However, those assuming the Nebraska–Penn State rivalry is all fire and fury may be surprised by the new update. Despite their fierce on-court battles, including the 2024 semifinal, recent moments reveal mutual respect. During a Big Ten Network shoot on July 28, Nebraska’s Harper Murray and Rebekah Allick were seen laughing and chatting with Penn State players. They were seen exchanging some lighthearted banter during the shoot.

With Dani Busboom Kelly now at the helm and the weight of a proud legacy on her shoulders, Nebraska’s presence at the event wasn’t just about introductions. And in the same space, Penn State’s composed and respectful demeanor highlighted a rivalry built on mutual excellence rather than hostility.

Busboom Kelly has said, “Of course, being back in Nebraska. It’s the fans and the culture and just the game day.” And added, “I can’t wait to have the first game in PBA and, again, share this journey with so many people that care so much about it.”

Busboom Kelly further added, “It’s pretty apparent the first day I came to the gym that this group is really hungry to win. I think falling short for two years in a row will eat you alive a little bit—and this team is getting eaten alive.” The will to end the 8-year championship skid is now vibrant.

Joining her at the podium were Harper Murray, a junior outside hitter, and Rebekah Allick, a senior middle blocker. Both emphasized their roles as leaders on a team with national championship aspirations. “There is also a responsibility in being a senior and keeping the culture alive,” Allick said. “As upperclassmen, it’s our job to hold that culture and that team tradition alive because we know the expectation.”

But while the showdown starts, per Nebraska.tv, the Huskers open the season with two Red-White style scrimmages before beginning official play at the AVCA First Serve Showcase on August 22. Nebraska will face Pittsburgh in its opener, followed by a marquee matchup against Stanford two days later.
