Spencer Lee stepped into the 2025 Senior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, as the top seed at 57kg, with a lot of expectations on his shoulders. The 2024 Olympic silver medalist was seen as a top contender for gold, especially after a strong 10-0 technical fall win in his first match against Turkey’s Yusuf Demir.

In a surprising turn of events during the quarterfinals, Lee faced off against Armenia’s Arsen Harutyunyan and ended up losing in a decisive 14-3 technical fall. This unexpected defeat sent shockwaves through the wrestling community and put a sudden stop to his pursuit of the title. Fellow elite wrestlers definitely took notice of how surprising Lee’s defeat was.

A fan on X recently reached out to former world champion and Olympian Ben Askren, saying, “Legitimately would like to hear your thoughts on Spencer Lee.” Askren didn’t hold back when he said, “That was shocking. Can’t ever remember seeing him lose in that fashion.”

That match was unusual for Spencer Lee. He started strong, but in the end, Harutyunyan’s constant pressure was just too much for him. The Armenian wrestler pulled off several takedowns and a key four-point move, racking up a 10-3 lead that ultimately resulted in a technical fall victory with just under a minute and forty-seven seconds left in the match.

It’s not every day you see Lee take such a decisive loss, especially since he’s known for his explosive offense and tough, technical style. But last year, his Olympic campaign was a whole different story.

Spencer Lee acknowledged his mistakes afterward

After snagging a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Spencer Lee shared his thoughts, mixing pride with a bit of frustration, all while showing his strong determination. Even though Lee reached a huge milestone, they were pretty clear that anything less than gold just felt like not quite enough. He pointed out, “I don’t think there will ever be perspective where I think (silver is) good. Twenty years from now you try to name the Olympic silver medalist and I bet you can’t. It’s because no one cares.”

Lee shared his disappointment about how he performed in the gold medal match against Japan’s Rei Higuchi, especially pointing out that he felt he didn’t take enough initiative. He said, “I’m a guy who believes more than wins and losses it’s about effort, and I don’t think I put a lot of effort into that match. I didn’t deserve to win today, and that’s OK.”

Sure, Spencer Lee didn’t take home the gold, but it was great to see him recognize where he fell short compared to his opponent, showing off that humility of his. This is what sets the wrestler apart from all the other competitors.
