Hulk Hogan is back in reality TV! Well, not exactly, but he’s teaming up with wrestling promoter Eric Bischoff to promote the multi-million dollar Real American Freestyle League, which seems already to be something that is going to change the face of American wrestling.
While Hogan is set to be the league’s commissioner, Bischoff, who worked for the WCW in the 90s, is going to be the chief media officer. Former UFC coach Israel Martinez will join the duo as the COO of the endeavor. The Real American Freestyle League is named after Hulk Hogan’s beer brand and backed by a number of corporate sponsors who seem to be all set to lay the foundation for the ‘incentives’ the league seems to be built upon, i.e., what makes it really stand apart from the NCAA.
In a recent interview on Fox News, Bischoff spoke on this, saying, “There’s going to be incentives, too, much like you see in a UFC. So incentives that are different to collegiate rules or Olympic rules that will incentivize some of the more dramatic kind of takedowns and tosses and things that are just more…” Unfortunately, Bischoff was cut off before viewers could figure out what the final ‘more’ was, but it all seems quite clear at this point. This is going to be Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff’s Wild West League, no holds barred!

How do incentives work in UFC? What can we expect from Hulk Hogan’s RAF league that will make it different from the NCAA?
Let’s not undersell Hulk Hogan, though he seems to be more a reality show persona at this point than a professional wrestler, the man has put years into the sport and even trained in Japan where he came to be known as Ichiban: ‘number one.’ So, surely with him as commissioner, there will be some craft to it. At the same time, this is the ‘Hulk,’ and part of Bischoff’s plan for this new league is to partner with a streaming service where they can presumably get paid based on viewership ratings, so viewership is key, which means exciting wrestling is top priority, something that Bischoff wasn’t beating around the bush about on Fox News.
The Real American Freestyle League is expected to have monthly events, each featuring eight weight classes with eight classes for men and four for women. There is also going to be a ton of money in this league, with Hulk Hogan already confirming that millions of dollars have been raised to start it. Further, the incentives Bischoff spoke of probably refer to the performance bonuses that are similar to those in the UFC. For example, wrestlers get paid extra for the best fight of the night or the most flashy performance. Some top fighters also get a cut of the viewership money, pushing them into performing for the views.

What’s your perspective on:
Is the Real American Freestyle League the future of wrestling or a threat to tradition?
Have an interesting take?
Of course, it is a tough one. While this private league offers young wrestlers the chance to make big money, it does take away a little from the traditional style of the game with so much emphasis being on viewership. Additionally, certain moves that are disallowed in NCAA wrestling, like chokes, joint locks, and striking, are allowed in UFC, and our guess is the RAF will have no qualms about the same.
“We’re taking amateur wrestling, and we’re making it the black and blue, professional free-style wrestling.” Hogan said in his typical Hulk Hogan way on Fox News. Whether it becomes the future of freestyle or just a flash in the squared circle, one thing’s certain—Hulk Hogan’s latest slam is aiming straight for the spotlight, and it’s putting tradition in a headlock.
