USMNT Star Megan Rapinoe Aims To Go Deeper than ‘Surface Scratching’ In New Book Club

The American soccer superstar, Megan Rapinoe recently started her virtual book club. The USWNT legend has always been vocal on societal issues. The book club comes as a means of continuing her activism. The Ballon d’Or Féminin winner further talked about how it will look to delve into a deeper understanding of sensitive topics.

Rapinoe is one of the most recognizable faces in football and has a decent shout in any G.O.A.T debates. She recently led the US team to a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. The 36-year-old is part of the old guard of the USWNT, also comprising Carli Llyod and Alex Morgan who have dominated international football.

Megan Rapinoe is more than just a sportsperson

Included in Time magazines 100 Most Influential People of 2020, the American is not only limited to the field of football. Rapinoe is an outspoken advocate on LGBT+ rights.

Rapinoe is ready to spend her off-time with a book in her hand. The soccer superstar is one amongst many others who launched a virtual book club during the pandemic. Within her literary circle, the “Call-In”, she says they will discuss topics like racism, immigration, transgender rights, body positivity, and addiction. With that, she also added, “This allows people to take a more in-depth journey, whether through sexuality or racism or white privilege, or whatever it is. And I don’t have the answers. I’m not a finished product. I’ll be getting right in the mix with everyone else”.

What does Rapinoe say about the book club environment?

With an aim to foster a particular kind of atmosphere for the book club, the footballer said, “Hopefully the environment of this book club will not be one of comfort and surface-scratching conversation. The trust will come when everyone shows up vulnerable, willing to listen and learn, and with an understanding that the goal is never to “arrive,” because this journey to empathy, equality, and justice is never finished.
