Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters Announce Good News for Fans

In exciting news for tennis fans, it is confirmed that Venus Williams will play in the Monterrey Open in March. The WTA Tour event will begin on March 2 in Mexico. The event is part of the International Tournaments category in WTA, which offers the winner 280 points.

The tournament is still almost a month away and so many players have yet to confirm their participation, including the defending champion. Garbine Muguruza is the current defending champion, having won it in 2019 as well as 2018.

But there is one other name that will make the fans jump in joy.

Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters to play Monterrey Open

Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters are set to take part in the WTA International event in Monterrey. These two ladies alone will surely attract a horde of crowd to the tennis courts. They boast of a combined tally of 11 Grand Slams in singles’ tennis.

Kim Clijsters was always a crowd favourite during her earlier playing days. It wasn’t difficult to see why. She had, and still has, an infectious smile and a kind heart. But when she stepped on court, she was a warrior.

While Clijsters was scheduled to comeback to the sport last year, she had to delay her plans due to injury concerns. But she eventually announced her 2020 return. Her announcement video was beautiful just as her tennis too.

Williams’ participation was confirmed as well through the tournament’s twitter.

The seven time Grand Slam champion has struggled with her ranking in the past two years. After finishing 2017 as the No. 5 player, she dropped down to No. 40 by the end of 2018. her year ending rank in 2019 was 53.

She is currently the World No. 55 in the WTA rankings.

Watching the two former Grand Slam winners and World No. 1 players will be a joy to watch for any tennis fan. The only thing that would get the fans even more excited is if the two meet in the event.

Now that would be absolutely fantastic. To see the two champions face-off once again as they did years ago would be nostalgia at its best. The last time they played each other was almost decade ago. Williams and Clijsters met 13 times in their careers, with Kim just shading the rivalry with 7 wins.

Another big name player confirmed to play there is Sloane Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion.
