Mutua Madrid Open 2021 is set to begin in two weeks’ time. It is a flagship ATP and a WTA event. And gracing this year’s event in the Spanish capital is Venus Williams. Thus this also confirms her participation in the European clay swing ahead of French Open 2021.
Madrid Open recently announced that Venus has been given the wildcard to participate in the 2021 edition. The American last made an appearance in Madrid in 2018, suffering a first-round defeat. Moreover, the seven-time Grand Slam champ is a former runner-up as well. Venus is among the five players to have received the wildcard.

Venus was given the wildcard following her slump in the ranking. The Madrid Open is a 64 player draw and Venus is way below the rankings to make it into the main draw of the event. She is currently 92nd ranked and her point total has dropped below 1000.

Looking at the Williams sisters, this time Venus will be participating instead of Serena. The main draw in Madrid is stacked and Serena is the only top 40 player to miss the event. Serena’s reason for the withdrawal is different. Her beef with Madrid Open tournament owner Ion Tiriac is known to all and thus unsurprisingly she has skipped his tournament.

Venus Williams’ 2021 form
Venus‘ 2021 form has seen a small upward curve when compared to 2020. She had started 2021 on a four-match losing streak. The losing streak was broken in her first match of 2021, but she has not reached the latter stages of any tournament. She was ousted in the second round of the Australian Open 2021 and in the first round of the Miami Open.
With Venus being on the fringes of the top 100, she needs to do well in other tournaments to ensure that she remains in contention for the main draw of the French Open 2021. A few more bad performances from her side could see her going out of the top 100.
