What started out as a fun and friendly hiking adventure in the midst of nature’s white canvas quickly turned into a near-death experience for the trio. Authorities revealed that the avalanche at Cairngorms was caused by the group when they crossed the north-east slope at 1100 metres.

A member of the Scottish Avalanche Information Service informed the media about the events of their ordeal. They were swept down the slope by the avalanche but, as luck would have it, found an escape route. Fortunately for them, the ground shifted to an elevation as they reached the east side of the Cas Ridge range. That allowed them to break away from the debris and avoid getting injured.

The dangers of hiking in Scotland

According to the reports by the Scottish Avalanche Information Service or SAIS, Cairngorms did not pose a significant avalanche threat that day. In fact, people were advised to stay away from Torridon. The winters this time have witnessed over 37 avalanches already but thankfully have not claimed a single life yet.

Last year, a group of hiking enthusiasts got lost in the Aonach Eagach ridge in Glen Cloe. Alarm bells were raised when the trio did not return from their walk, which had 1100 metres climb and stretched for six miles. Rescue operations were underway swiftly and their bodies were shortly discovered by the coastguard helicopters.

The bodies of two men and a woman were recovered. The names of the hikers were not revealed in order to give the family privacy in the time of grief. A hiking trek in the mountain’s range of Scotland has proved to be quite deadly over the years.
