Cycling might appear as a straightforward game, but the reality is far from the truth. A lot of technical variables are involved in modern-day cycling that play a pivotal role in the performance of an athlete. Keeping in line with the latest developments, Stefan Kung has something cooking. The Swiss cyclist is a highly favored name for clinching the medals at the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. However, his recent interview has hinted at an upgrade in equipment that might help him significantly in Paris.

The upgrade in question is a Wilier Triestina time trial bike. Reluctant to spill the beans on the technical specifications of the bike, the 30-year-old stated that the bike is supposed to be ready before the Olympics. So what is this new bike all about? Will Küng be able to feast off from his new upgrade?

From the very beginning of this year, Küng has been invested in a new project with the Italian brand. In a recent interview conducted by GCN during the Volta AO Algarve, Kung said, “In the beginning, you think that it’s going to be fine but then sometimes it’s not always easy.” He also stated that when one transitions from one team to the other, despite the stock of frames, one waits for an early delivery. Küng added, “Wilier has been great throughout the whole process and I’m actually really happy with the new set-up. Also, the motivation and support that they are showing for us is really helping.”

With this sudden and unexpected change of plans, fans were definitely speculating about the performance of his new two-wheeled weapon; he dealt with the question in a rather unique style. He laughed a little and then said, “Something new is coming, let’s say. Until the summer there’s a new project that we’re working on. It’s going to be something nice. That’s all I can say for now. Further details will be released at a later date.” Küng, although revealed no further details, highlighted that Wilier wanted to move forward with a team who are innovative and cited this to be the probable reason behind their project and ratio moving toward the desired direction.

Wilier too has not yet to reveal any big details but shared that they are putting up regular hard work to develop, “increasingly high performance bicycle” for its two sponsored World Tour teams, Astana and Groupama-FDJ. Kung might be looking for a new setup to further protect him from injuries like the one he recently acquired.

In November 2023, Küng was forced to temporarily take a leave from the competitive world of cycling as he suffered a concussion, a fracture of the cheekbone, and multiple other hand fractures during the European Time Trial Championships. Since then, he has been healing from his injuries and returned to the competitive velodrome with Volta ao Algarve. He has participated with a plaster on his left cheek to prevent sun rays from affecting the newly formed skin.

Küng is already gearing up for his next planned move to secure his wins in the upcoming events. He added, This a first check before the Tour and the first outing with the new set-up but I also know that the set-up between here and the Games… I still know that I have a little extra coming but this is still a good test and the goal on the start line is still to win. I’ve won twice here before.

While fans are eagerly waiting to know more about his deal and a new step forward with Wilier as a part of Groupama-FDJ, Küng is now solely focussing on his performance on the track. I feel really good where I am now, so I’m focusing on the moment and not so much about the other thing. If I have everything I need, then there’s no reason for me to look elsewhere”, said Stefan Küng. His deal with Groupama-FDJ will officially continue until 2025.
