With an audacious target in mind, Safia Hosein made headlines, leaving her footprints on the glacial lands of Antarctica. Gracing the region’s highest peak at a towering elevation, Hosein’s persistent efforts seemingly knew no bounds.

Recorded amidst the ongoing holiday festivities, the Trini climbing enthusiast seized an impressive Christmas present for her country. On December 25, Hosein succeeded in her Antarctic conquest, earning a prestigious title as the first national citizen in doing so. Remarkably, while her frozen tour unveiled diverse tales of perseverance, Safia was not the sole victor covering the exhilarating peak.

Climbing venture leads to national pride 

Exhibiting a treacherous route for climbing addicts, the Mount Vinson area of Antarctica has its hurdles. As the highest peak across the ice-laden continent, its steep inclines have always posed challenges for enthusiasts. Standing at a whopping height of 4,892 meters, the mountain witnessed Hosein’s skillful presence this month, soaring in excellence with every step ahead. .

However, that was not all to this Trini climbing icon, whose insatiable wanderlust propelled her through the routes of over 60 countries. Mastering peaks like Mount Kilimanjaro and navigating the treacherous terrain of Mount Nyiragongo’s active volcano, Hosein’s spirited trail depicted boundless potential. 

And now, in an epitome of her climbing ordeals, Safia broke country-wide records, fluttering the Trinidad and Tobago flag, that too, in the biting Antarctic wind! Sharing her candid joy from this recent triumph, the Trini icon stated, “It doesn’t matter where I am on the planet”, adding, “I will always be a ‘Biche Girl’.”

Significantly, the chilling landscapes of Mount Vinson saw another brave-hearted climbing escapade conducted by an Indian mountaineer. Hailing from Kerala, Shaikh Hassan Khan kept his government employment aside when he planned for a power-packed session across Antarctica’s highest summit.

Conquering the frozen climbing routes of this Antarctic highland, Khan emerged as a relentless mountaineer, while his latest trip echoed an array of prior wins. Evidently, his exhilarating pursuits involved covering the grandeur of Mount Everest in Asia, followed by a bold ascent to the frigid heights of Mount Denali.

Besides crafting his climbing memories at the North American summit, Khan also triumphed in countless other campaigns. While scaling the Mount Vinson region marked his fifth trip, it became a testament to the Indian ascender’s unwavering dedication. Although the dire surroundings posed severe challenges for him, Shaikh held on to his high-spirited energy. 

Despite suffering frostbite on both hands, the climbing enthusiast endured freezing temperatures during his Antarctic adventure. Plummeting to a bone-chilling -40° Celsius, Khan’s insufferable experience encountered multiple battles, but admirably, nothing could deter his vibrant persona. 

Separated by continents yet united by passionate climbing resolves, Safia Hosein and Shaikh Hassan Khan made history with their individual attempts in Antarctica. While Mount Vinson stood tall against their brave excursions, that did not stop them from seizing glory, prompting Hosein’s national success alongside a personal win for Khan.
