A recent exhilarating women’s race at the Chicago CycloCross Cup exhibited two remarkable cyclists showcasing their talents. The event was held at Jackson Park in Chicago, Illinois, on October 7, where Tessa Johnson, 25, and Evelyn Williamson, 30, made history with their epic gameplay. While the match witnessed fierce competition among its female athletes, the trans players’ incredible achievements left the audience controversially astounded.

While Tessa Johnson displayed her incredible prowess in the women’s SingleSpeed category, Evelyn Williamson put up an admirable show of persistence and skillset. However, their jaw-dropping feats were not safe from sudden hurdles. Reportedly, the remarkable race was followed by the cycling community deeply engrossed in debates surrounding a delicate topic. The arguments portrayed a dilemma regarding the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports, shadowing the event’s spirit.

Tessa Johnson left the audience in awe when she claimed the gold medal, winning the thrilling match. Evelyn secured the silver, while Allison Zmuda won the bronze, making her the only biologically female cyclist on the winning podium. Tessa, evidently shining in this category, also came first in the cycling race for the women’s Cat Half. While Johnson and Williamson sent shockwaves through the sporting world with their outstanding performances, it also set the stage for vivid conversations over fairness and inclusivity.

Controversy loomed large over the event as critics argued that the transgender athletes held a considerable biological advantage over their female rivals. Backing the cycling professionals, the Chicago CrossCup published their official statement on their website, quoting, “The CCC has always been first and foremost about fostering a positive & supportive community built around competitive CycloCross racing, and that means welcoming and challenging everyone who wants to contribute to the series.”

They mentioned following the policies of USA Cycling’s Transgender Athlete Participation, which lets the participants select their own gender in non-elite faces. This declaration eventually extended the momentum of the issue.

A debate on fairness like never before

Transgender cyclist Evelyn Williamson, who had previously competed in both men’s and women’s categories, raised eyebrows with her second position. Evelyn had triumphed with similar glory in a past women’s race, but apparently, she failed to do so during a previous men’s championship. According to reports, she missed her chance of standing on the winners’ podium while competing in a cycling venture with 40 other professionals. Williamson had recently also made headlines for her personal life involving fellow transgender cyclist Austin Killips.

Austin had sparked a stinging outrage in the cycling world when she defeated CycloCross star Hannah Arensman at a championship showdown in 2022. Shockingly, Arensman did not take the failure lightly, moving forward with quitting her passion. She expressed feeling shattered by the presence of trans competitors in women’s leagues, stating, “This is not fair sport, and the governing bodies, who should have made the rules at the beginning, need to realize it.” While the former player left the sport, it initiated turbulence, and critics argued that experiences like these highlighted the complexity of the issue.

The storm over this disputed issue spilled over onto social media, with Twitter buzzing with comments and opinions. One user pointed out its root, highlighting the biological aspect of the debate, as he commented, “What impressive men who can beat women with their testosterone.” Another user explained the factual angle of it, remarking that the athletes had “different muscle, bone, and ligament composition, greater lung capacity.” Fueling the outrage further, another comment read, “How bad are these men that they have to compete against women?”
