Ice hockey and combat sports are two very different disciplines. However, in a recent NHL showdown, the snowy realms of ice hockey transformed into a heated boxing showdown. The viral video focuses on the recent NHL showdown between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Washington Capitals. As the game picked up intensity, an unwanted scuffle ensued between Tom Wilson of the Capitals and Elvis Merzlikins of the Blue Jackets. 

As the duo traded punches in front of a full house audience, the brutality of the face-off surprised many. With a bizarre scene unfolding, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of the chaos below. 

NHL player-goalie clash in a boxing fury

The video was recently uploaded by ‘Barstool Sports’ on Twitter, recently rebranded as X. In the 13 seconds long video, Tom Wilson could be seen charging towards his opponent’s goal. Unfortunately, as he reached close to the goalpost, Wilson lost his balance and collided with the goalie, Merzlikins. However, things did not end there as Wilson slipped and fell on  Merzlikins’ stick. 

If that was not already a bizarre scene, more was to follow. As Merzlikins tried to retrieve his stick, Wilson posed as an obstacle repeatedly. Such an action was not taken in good spirit by the Blue Jackets’ goalie. Merzlikins went furious as he unloaded a series of jabs at Wilson. Soon, the referees arrived at the scene to intervene and pacify the brawling parties. Such a hilarious and bizarre clash was bound to garner mass attention, and so it did. 

Fans react to the NHL fist fury 

The post, hilariously captioned, “reasonable way to react to someone breaking into your house,” received more than 416k views in just a few hours. More than 1k viewers liked the video at the time of writing this article.

One of the users commented that such fights indeed seem hilarious and ‘laughable.’

One fan sharing a personal thought wrote how he loved the fact that Wilson was able to stand up.

One fan wittily added the probable reaction of Wilson during the fight.

As the situation calmed, the referee’s decision to penalize only Merzlikins sent the Blue Jackets fans into a frenzy.
