In the sports world, “money slipping” refers to the unethical act of diverting funds intended for talented youngsters, causing harm to their future prospects. This harmful practice particularly affects those lacking sufficient financial support, robbing them of opportunities to showcase their abilities. The greed of certain individuals in positions of power deprives aspiring athletes of a level playing field, hindering fair competition and inclusivity. Tragically, even within youth sports groups, embezzlement can occur, exemplified by a woman treasurer who slyly diverted a significant sum. The consequences of money slipping are dire, as young athletes are denied the chances they deserve to succeed and pursue their dreams. Combatting this unethical behaviour is crucial to nurturing a more equitable and just sports environment for all.

The Mount Morris Mountaineers Wrestling Fund Scandal

Alisha L. Patton, the former treasurer of the non-profit youth athletic fund for the Mt. Morris Mountaineers wrestling group, faces allegations of embezzlement. She is accused of siphoning nearly $20,000 from the fund, intended to support the wrestling program at Mount Morris Consolidated School District. At 39 years of age, Patton now confronts the possibility of a severe penalty: up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

The incident has left the community stunned and concerned about the impact on the wrestling program and the trust placed in those responsible for managing funds. In the wake of the alleged embezzlement at the Mt. Morris Mountaineers wrestling fund, the secretary, Tammi Gilbert, has stepped forward to address the troubling situation.

In a heartfelt statement, she emphasized that her main concern lies with the children involved, stating, “My biggest issue is not even me. It’s the kids. Everything we do is for the kids. It’s not like she stole money from me. She stole from these kids.”

The incident came to light when board members attempted to withdraw funds from the bank account. They encountered bounced checks, prompting them to report the matter to the police in November 2019. In the past, the Mt. Morris Mountaineers wrestling group flourished, supporting 25 to 30 children with uniforms and coaching to shape their dreams.
