Being a motorcyclist isn’t for everybody. It certainly seems to be a young man’s game. High speeds, steep turns, and quick reactions aren’t necessarily terms we associate with older folks. Yet, it remains one of the most popular pastimes among older people, who have either kept biking their entire adult lives or have taken to the sport seeking a new thrill later in life. Last week, for one such elderly gentleman, things took a very tragic turn.
The incident involved a 60-year-old man, who was weaving through traffic on a black 2022 black Suzuki GSX at excessive speed, eventually losing his life after colliding with the back of a blue 2022 Nissan Kicks.

Tragically, the man died at the scene of the crash at 2:22 p.m. on I-10 West near Schuster Avenue in El Paso. The 60-year-old’s name had not been disclosed pending the notification of his family. According to authorities, the accident reportedly took place moments after the blue Nissan entered traffic after a roadside tire change.
While the motorcyclist died instantly, authorities rushed the driver of the Nissan, Martina Medina, to the hospital with non-fatal injuries. According to local authorities, this incident is the latest of 49 vehicular accidents that have taken place on El Paso’s streets and highways this year.

What were the consequences?
Besides the unfortunate passing and injuries, the crash shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 for five hours last Tuesday near the University of Texas. The closure caused major congestion and traffic delays through the evening as drivers sought alternate routes. Authorities eventually reopened the highway at about 7:30 p.m. when officials cleared the investigations. Although the eastbound lanes remained open, all traffic was forced to exit the freeway at Porfirio Diaz Street.
Listing “excessive speed” as the cause of the accident, local authorities urged people to drive responsibly and obey speed limits.

The state’s official records show that there have been about 2,815 serious motorcycle crashes in 2022 alone. Witnesses cited distractions while driving as the main reason for a majority of the accidents. Many hope the issue is combatted with steps to make motorcycling in Texas safer.
