Even Madagascar’s President, Andry Rajoelina, was present at the Mahamasina Stadium. He was in the capital city of Antananarivo during the ceremony. In a poignant moment, he asked the assembled crowd to observe a brief period of silence. It is to honour those who have lost their lives.

The stadium itself is designed to accommodate around 41,000 individuals. It has witnessed similar tragic incidents in the past. Tragedy struck in 2018 when one person lost their life. At least 37 others were injured in a crush preceding a qualifying game for the African Cup of Nations soccer tournament. This tournament is played between Madagascar and Senegal. The grim history repeated in 2019, claiming 15 lives in a stampede during a music concert hosted at the same stadium.
