The international event concluded last week and the Australian contingent secured a record-equaling 13 gold medals. The USA ended its campaign with a total of seven gold medals. It became only in the second instance since the 1956 Olympics that they managed to get a tally higher than the United States athletes in an international event.

Despite securing the higher tally of gold medals, the contingent from Australia did not receive the award for the ‘Best Team’ of the meet. According to the tally system of World Athletics, teams with the highest medal tally receive the award. USA ended up with a higher tally of silver and bronze medals, which elevated their final tally to 35.

The Australian contingent’s tally stood at 22, with 13 gold medals, 6 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Clearly annoyed and unhappy with the decision of the World Athletics body, Australian swimmer Cate Campbell did not mince her words to the media.

Rebirth of a historic rivalry

Campbell’s interview with the Today Show was electrifying, and the athlete dropped some bombshells that left everyone amazed. She called the American athletes sore losers. Furthermore, she expressed her annoyance with their ritual of ringing a cowbell when an athlete from their team entered.

“I mean, Australia coming out on top of the world is one thing, but it is just so much sweeter beating America,” the four-time Olympics winner said.

“The first night of competition, we did not have to hear ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ ring out through the stadium. I cannot tell you how happy that made me.” If I hear that song again, it will be too soon. Bring on Paris. That’s all I have to say to the US. Stop being sore losers.”

USA athletes expressed their disappointment with the comments made and the entire saga has revived an age-old fierce rivalry. American athlete Lilly King put out a tweet that said: “Sorry we aren’t so uptight, we can’t cheer for our teammates as they walkout for events. See you in Paris.”

Experts, pundits, and former athletes have thrown their support behind the entire episode. They argue swimming needs intense moments and rivalries among competitors to stay relevant outside of the Olympics. The Paris Olympics 2024 promises to be a riveting affair and with the war of words finally commencing, things are only going to heat up!
