Adhering to a sport’s playbook, be it a coach or a player, is a mandate for all. In a similar turn of events, the NCAA has suspended Memphis men’s basketball coach Penny Hardaway for 3 games in the 23-24 season on the charges of breaching recruitment rules and head coach responsibilities.

What exactly was the violation that took place by coach Penny Hardaway?

The issue dates back to 2021 when the recruitment visits were taking place for the basketball prospects. As per the rulebook, there must be no in-house visits of any sort with the prospects. This was the case of one such highly prospective player who was studying high school. Initially, it was an assistant coach who visited the high school guy’s home, post which Penny followed suit. They suspended the latter for not just not following the rules himself but also not reporting his junior’s act to the concerned officials on the board. Penny initially refuted these claims, saying he was not aware of this rule.

As reported by ESPN, “Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse,” the panel said. “The head coach’s inattentiveness to compliance — particularly at a time when his program was under scrutiny related to a different infractions case — resulted in careless violations. Head coaches must remain diligent in monitoring their staff and promoting compliance at all times and cannot delegate those responsibilities to compliance staff members and administrators.”
