As we all know now , Chennai has just witnessed the worst rainfall in the past 100 years which resulted in massive destruction, both in terms of human lives and property. While many, including personalities like Shah Rukh Khan, Kumar Sangakkara etc . have pledged their financial support to the situation in Chennai, we often forget the contribution of people who instead of contributing via money lend their support in other ways.

The notable contribution of the Indian Chess legend Viswanathan Anand and his family.

While Anand has been busy competing in the London Chess Classic, his family  opened their doors to some flood-affected people of nearby slums, providing them accommodation, food and clothes. Although situated on the ground floor , Anand’s home was largely unaffected by the torrential rains and the floods that followed.

“This is a normal gesture. What we did is just small. There are many people who have done more than what we have done,” Anand’s wife Aruna told PTI. The family accommodated about 13-14 people living in slums near RA Puram where their house is located, after water entered their homes, she said.

“We just gave them food, blankets, bedsheets as most of them are kids. This is a normal gesture. What we did is just small,” she said.

Not one to stop here, Viswanathan Anand is also constantly mobilising people on twitter to help the needy by tweeting time and again. His family is set to announce monetary help soon as well. This just shows that amidst all the darkness that threatens to engulf us, humanity and kindness still prevails.
