2020 has been the year where Dominic Thiem has claimed for himself in the tennis world. Amongst the new crop of players, the Austrian has been the first to win a major, winning the US Open earlier this year. After making it to the finals of a grand slam on three previous occasions, Thiem finally won his first grand slam on the fourth attempt.

Dominic kept on believing in himself. After all those close-fought matches, he didn’t lose the desire to cross the final hurdle in his journey. Earlier this year, Thiem was very close to beating Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open final. In recent meetings, the Austrian has the advantage over the likes of Federer, Djokovic, or Nadal

While speaking in an interview with Wolfgang Thiem, Dominic’s father, he ushered in praise for his son’s former coach, Gunter Bresnik. He even credited Gunter for his development as a coach. He stated, “I was an inexperienced coach. Technically, he’s one of the best. He gave Dominic all his shots and his aggressive style of play. He had a vision and stuck to it. Every day I was on the court with them and it was a beautiful experience. Retrospectively, I think I would do the same thing again.”

However, Wolfgang also claims that his son should’ve changed his coach slightly early in his career. He felt having a coach who has had playing experience would’ve brought the perfect balance.

He further added, “But maybe it would have been better, to change sooner, when Dominic was twenty, to give him a coach who used to be a really good player, like Denis Shapovalov with Mikhail Youzhny. A technical coach and a coach who has been on tour work very differently. This kind of coach can get you to the next level.”
