In Tuesday’s match between Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates, Bryce Harper, with a powerful hit, was almost responsible for a nasty injury.

Steve Brault was the pitcher for the Pirates, when Harper hit a powerful linedrive back to Brault. To escape the pitch, Brault had to quickly sway away from it. Had it not been for his quick reflexes, it would have certainly been a horrible injury, or even more than that.

According to Baseball Savant, that linedrive left Harper’s bat an exit velocity of just 77.6 mph. To get hit at such a speed would certainly have been extremely hazardous, and that Brault managed to escape it, can be considered remarkably lucky.

Eventually Philadelphia Phillies lost the game 4-5 to Pittsburgh Pirates, and Harper contributed a good part.

Bryce Harper first played Major League Baseball (MLB) as a 19-year old, in 2012, two years after he was the first overall pick in the 2010 MLB draft. He was also the selected for the All-Star game in the same year, which made him the youngest position player to perform in an All-Star Game.

Harper won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2012. In 2015, the Baseball Writers Association of America unanimously named his as the National League’s Most valuable Player. At 23, he was again the youngest player to have won the award.

As a free agent during the 2018–19, he signed a 13-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. The contract worth $330 million, at the time, was the richest contract in the history of North American sports.

Few weeks ago, Harper silenced a rather hostile Giants crowd with a spectacular walk-off grand slam. “But being able to hit a walk-off homer like that is what you live for. That was one of the coolest moments I’ve ever had in my life,” he said after the extraordinary walk-off home run.

Haper, who is married to Kyla Varner for three years now, became a father only a few days ago. The couple were also seen with their new born in a photo on Instagram, after Harper posted their first photo together.
