Roger Federer has always spoken highly of his father. Well, Robert has always been a very crucial part of his son’s life.

From a very young age, Roger was given all the freedom by his father to explore whatever he wants. Despite being from a non-athletic background (he’s a chemical engineer though he likes tennis), he was supportive of his son’s ambitions. He gave Roger the right kind of exposure at the right age.

However, in a very funny video on the internet, you can see Roger playing some tennis with his old man. The best part was that his father toyed with Roger using the most efficient weapon in Roger’s armoury.

Roger Federer plays tennis with father

Federer fans can’t stop drooling over his razor-sharp one-handed backhand. This part of his game allows him to contend with the strong serving opponents.

However, as Federer played volley with his father, Robert turned the game on its head. As soon as he got some hitting space, Robert pulled out a quick one-handed backhand. This was certainly not what the Swiss maestro was expecting.

Roger, who wouldn’t show his back to the toughest of opponents, was compelled to do the same against this onslaught. If you look closely at the video, Robert hit the ball pretty hard and it would have certainly hurt Roger! However, Roger laughed it off as he picked up the ball again for another round of exciting volley.

Robert is pretty much a simple family man. He lived the average middle-class life, had a decent job, a good family but a pretty extraordinary son. However, Robert was never a settler. From all over Switzerland to South Africa (where he met Roger’s mother Lynette) and back to Switzerland, he travelled quite a bit.

Roger still says that he has adopted the parenting style of his mom and dad in bringing up his children. That means a balanced mix of control and independence. It’s certainly heartwarming to see their special relationship.
