WATCH: Manuel Neuer Almost Concedes a Goal from near Halfway Line

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, on Saturday showed another exclusive Neuer moment in the DFL Super Cup agianst Borussia Dortmund. He was caught miles in front of his line and very nearly conceded a goal.

Neuer is many times seen off his line for some acrobatic saves. Under Pep Guardiaola, the 33 year old revolutionized goal keeping as he was often seen well in front of his line helping the team as an 11th outfield player. After returning from his injury, there was a substantial decrease such actions from the German international.

But during Thursday’s DFL Super Cup, he was found charging at Paulo Alcacer to try and close him down almost near the centre line.

When Bayern lost possession during their attack, the ball came to Alcacer with an accurate ball forward and Neuer was caught completely out of position. He had no option but to rush at the Dortmund attacker. Alcacer saw the goalkeeper and went for goal from dipstance. Luckily for Neuer and Bayern, the shot was fired just wide of the post and the score remained 0-0.

“They used to say, don’t get involved in things you don’t need to”, the commentator said as Neuer escaped humiliation by a few inches.

Though Alcacer could not cash in on the German number one’s mistake, Dortmund ended up on the right side of the result as Jadon Sancho powered them to a 2-0 victory. The teenager scored a goal and set up another one to help the German side to their sixth Super Cup title.

Kingsley Coman, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller came close to scoring, but Dortmund managed to keep the clean sheet in the season’s curtain raiser.

The loss was a demonstration of how the German Champions have been struggling to replace the legendary likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, while for Dortmund, it can be seen as a great improvement from the 5-0 thumping last season.

The 57th season of Bundesliga will kick-off on August 16, and with Bayern Munich looking to defend the title, Doetmund will feel they will have their chances in the title race against a slightly weakened Bayern side.
