The UFC viewers can now get an even closer look at the action going on in the ring. How you ask. The answer is simple, RefCam.

What is the RefCam? It is a camera placed on to the top of the referee’s shirt or on his cap if he’s wearing one. An Ultra HD lens will give us a closer look into the fight. Through this angle, we will get to see the fight from the referee’s perspective. That is, it is like we’re literally inside the ring with the fighters. Isn’t that great!

There are many positives that will come out of the use of this method. Primarily it’s a great new view for the fans. It gives them a better feel of the fight and will for sure add to the already intense watching experience.

Second of all, it will help the judges call the fight with higher accuracy. This removes any room for error in cases where the fighters tend to get cheeky with their moves. Dodging or breaking any of the rules will fall drastically. And if not, at least fighters will now get called out for it.

For example, in the Colby Covington vs Kamaru Usman fight. Kamaru Usman was accused of faking a shot to the groin region. He also allegedly faked an eye poke. All this can be avoided with the added angle the judges get to view the fight through.

Will the UFC implement this any time soon?

This has already seen implementation at Pride. It gave everyone, the fans, and the judges a first-hand view of the fight. An amazing example of this is Shotgun’s victory over Rampage. The referee wore a headcam and captured the entire bout from his perspective.
