Team USA dominated Japan’s defense from the very beginning. They began aggressively and went 4-0 up in the first two minutes. From that point, they never looked back. Following this, they consistently maintained their offense and outscored Japan in 3 out of the 4 quarters. In this process, Brittney Griner scored 30 points by downright destroying Japan’s interior defense. 28 of her 30 points came from field goals inside the paint while 2 came from free throws. Without shooting a single 3, Griner dominated the points tally and made a new national record for scoring in a gold medal-winning match in the Olympics.

Bird and Taurasi are the veterans of the team who have shown the value of their experience on the court. Both finished the game with a positive +/- score showing extreme efficiency on the court. However, Griner has always shown the world that she is special after being the only player still in college after her first Olympic selection in 2012. Now Griner’s skill along with Bird and Taurasi’s experience is a deadly combination for any team to face. Therefore, by the end of the game, Team USA looked like they cruised to victory.
