Fresh from his historic triumph at Paris, Stanislas Wawrinka has picked his favorite for Wimbledon. It’s Novak Djokovic, the man who suffered one of his most painful defeats at the hands of the Swiss, in the French Open final. Stan has backed Novak to defend his title at Wimbledon, which begins from June 29.
The Swiss star was asked who he would back for the All England Club title other than himself. The 30- year old made it clear that his money would be on the world number one Novak Djokovic. He put the Serb ahead of his compatriot and seven-time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer, a double champion Nadal and the 2013 winner Andy Murray.
“Novak is No. 1. He’s been playing so well and especially thus year”, said Stan. ” I’m sure after losing the French Open final he wants more, he wants to come back and win the next big one. So he won last year. We all know that when he’s playing his best tennis he’s really good”, added Wawrinka.
The Swiss was quick to add that one cannot rule out Federer. He said, “Even if Roger lost few matches this year, I’m sure he’s going to be ready for the grass. Also, I think with him, with his confidence, if he can get through the first week or something, playing well, then, he’s going to be tough to beat.”
“Andy because he loves grass, playing at home, already won Wimbledon. He’s playing really well this year.” said Stan, about the chances of the Scott.
Wawrinka, who lost to Federer last year in quarter finals, is also one of the contenders to lift the trophy in July. As for Nadal, the road looks really tough. He is seeded tenth this year and can have an early clash with Novak, Roger or Andy, only if he happens to make it into the second week!
