“Everywhere,” Chicago Sky coach Tyler Marsh said when asked where on the court he wants Angel Reese to be once games start. They have added TCU standout guard Hailey Van Lith to complement her and veterans like Courtney Vandersloot to hold the team together. Their first pre-season game against Brazil was a first glance at how the pieces worked together. And it made a few things clear for the franchise, obliging a difficult call against Arella Guirantes, Tilly Boler, and Sammie Puisis.
In a comfortable 89-62 victory, Reese posted another impressive double-double, finishing the night with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals in 16 minutes. They had Sloot and Kia Nurse being the conductors of the offense as the rookies effortlessly slotted in. With the core of the team more or less confirmed, they waived the contracts of the three aforementioned.
Arella Guirantes has struggled to firmly establish herself in the WNBA since stepping into the league in 2021. Selected 22nd overall in the second round of the 2021 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks, Guirantes showed promise in her rookie season, appearing in 25 games and flashing her scoring ability. However, consistency proved elusive. She was waived by the Seattle Storm during her second season before making a brief return to the league in 2023, where she averaged 1.3 points and 0.7 rebounds over nine games. She was roped in by Sky in February this year.

What was Arella Guirantes’ contract with the Chicago Sky?
Guirantes was on a training camp contract with the Sky, which she signed in February this year. The 5’11” guard had her shot to impress Marsh and Co. during their practices and scrimmages. It was a mountain to climb to start with, and it became more so after Sky got in Van Lith. The training camp contract is a non-standard contract that transfers to an unprotected one-year deal if the player remains on the final roster. Since Guirantes has been waived, she won’t get the one-year deal.
What was Arella Guirantes’ salary for the 2025 WNBA season?
If Arella Guirantes had made the Chicago Sky’s final roster, she would’ve been set to earn a one-year, unprotected minimum deal worth $66,079 for the 2025 season. But after being waived, that paycheck is off the table. Instead, like most players on training camp contracts, Guirantes likely walked away with just a daily stipend for her time in camp — a standard setup across the WNBA. The exact amount hasn’t been disclosed, but it’s typical for players in her position to earn a modest day-to-day rate while competing for a roster spot.

Why was Arella Guirantes waived by the Chicago Sky?
This spring, she joined the Chicago Sky’s training camp in hopes of earning a roster spot, but the competition in the backcourt proved too steep. With established guards such as Kia Nurse and the highly touted newcomer Hailey Van Lith, alongside other backcourt staples, Guirantes faced an uphill battle. Ultimately, she was waived from her training camp contract as the Sky look to finalize their roster from 18 to 11 or 12 ahead of the regular season.
What’s your perspective on:
Did Chicago Sky make the right call waiving Guirantes, or should they have given her a chance?
