“We Exchanged Some Serious Words”- Boris Becker On Helping Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev shocked many people when he made it to the semifinals of Australian Open 2020. After an abysmal ATP Cup, many people had dismissed him as a serious contender.

However, the German went on to dispel many doubts as he ran through his competition. He defeated an in-form Andrey Rublev and a resurgent Stan Wawrinka along the way. Now, the greatest German player of all time has given Zverev his approval. We are talking about the former world no 1 Boris Becker.

What Did Boris Becker Say About Alexander Zverev?

Becker praised the performance of Zverev at the Australian Open and said that the young star was in the right direction. This is what he had to say –

“Alexander Zverev has made a great step forward with his first participation in a grand slam semi-final,” Becker told reporters in Berlin on Sunday. “Although he had difficult weeks before, for which there were reasons.”

Becker tried to explore the reasons behind Zverev disastrous ATP Cup. According to him, his poor pre-season training was to blame –

He didn’t train enough during the winter break and came to Brisbane unprepared.” He said.
“We exchanged some serious words off the court and he took them to heart.’
“Of course I’m happy he had such success. This is also a confirmation for him that he belongs at the top of the world (in tennis).”
“But the competitors never sleep, that’s a never-ending story. He has to confirm this again and again.”

Zverev will return to action next week at the Acapulco Open. Interestingly, the German finished runner up at the event last year, losing out to Nick Kyrgios in the finals. Becker also believes that the hardcourt tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami will also help Zverev –

The next tournaments are on hard courts in America. He will play there as well. There he can take a lot of points.” Becker concluded.
