Serena Williams recently served as a guest judge on the season finale of Project Runway. It is a show that pits aspiring designers against one another in a competition to remain the last one standing. Williams is very vocal about her beliefs and philosophy in life, and she had some wisdom to share.

Serena Williams is one of the greatest players to ever hold a tennis racket, but she is also known for something else- her sense of fashion.

The 23-time grand Slam champion has her own unique style of fashion, which is also a trend-setter in many ways. Unsurprisingly, she was invited on the season finale of Project Runway.

Talking to Geoffrey Mac, who eventually won the competition, Serena gave him some good advice going forward.

“It’s so important to believe in yourself. In my job, I look different, and that kind of put me on this path of being different. You have a lot to say and to design, and you should just be yourself.”

Williams talked to PEOPLE magazine after that as well. She cited the collection of another finalist, Nancy Volpe-Beringer, to stress on the importance of sustainability in fashion going forward.

“We have to somehow figure out how to live on this planet and not destroy it, so this really speaks to me personally. It has to be incorporated into design as well because fashion is a really big part of a lot of bad things that are happening and it’s just the honest truth. It’s about how do you create those collections that are more sustainable and takes less pressure from what we do.”

Sustainability is indeed the need of the hour. We have to incorporate a culture of sustainability, not just in fashion but in all fields in life. It is high time we took care of our planet as it has done for us.

Williams boasts of a huge fan following around the world, and her words will surely have a huge impact.
