“We Remember the Negative Things”: Rafael Nadal Opens up on the Pain of Losing

Rafael Nadal has suffered excruciating defeats and achieved exultant victories all over his career. However, what does the Spaniard remembers the most, the joy of winning or the pain of losing?
The 19-time Grand Slam champion feels that tennis is a sport based on the victories. He also suggested that there are very fewer defeats to look back upon than the victories.

“The negative things have a greater impact on”: Rafael Nadal
The Mallorcan compared tennis with life and explained that we tend to remember negative things in life. However, in tennis, the victories are most remembered. Nadal revealed that he has been happier with the victories than has been upset with his defeats.
“Depends on the moment. Unfortunately, in life more often, we remember the negative things because they have a greater impact on us. In tennis, it’s a little different, no? I think over my career that I have been happier with my victories than I have been upset with my defeats. I think,” Nadal said in an interview with Jon Wertheim on 60 minutes at CBS News.

Nadal’s successful 2019 season and commencement of 2020 season
Rafael Nadal clinched four ATP Tour titles in the 2019 season including the French Open 2019 and US Open 2019. The Spaniard also claimed the Laver Cup with Team Europe and led Spain to clinch the Davis Cup Finals. He also reached the finals of the Australian Open, where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic.

The Mallorcan enjoyed a 57-7 win-loss record in the 2019 season and reclaimed the No.1 spot in the ATP rankings.
The 33-year-old commenced the 2020 season confidently as he led Spain to the knockout stages without dropping a single set at the ATP Cup 2020.

However, he saw two defeats against David Goffin and Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals and finals respectively and failed to help his team win the inaugural ATP Cup 2020. It will be interesting to see if the World No.1 can defend his points in Melbourne? If the Mallorcan better his last year’s results at the Australian Open, he will win his 20th major title and draw level with Roger Federer.
