Who is Gael Monfils?

Gael Monfils was born in Paris to a Rufin, a former football player, and Sylvette, a nurse. Much before playing professional tennis, at his school, Monfils was considered an athletics prodigy. He had won the French under-13 and under-14 100m championships. But his love for tennis is known to have drawn him towards the sport.

As a professional tennis player, his achievements include reaching two Grand Slam singles semifinals- 2008 French Open and 2016 US Open- apart from winning three ATP Tour Masters 1000 singles finals – Paris Masters (2009, 2010) and Monte Carlo Masters (2016).

Monfils had started his professional tennis career in 2004. 2004 was a breakthrough year for Monfils where he turned pro from junior level. He won the three junior Grand Slam events (Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon), which dramatically improved his ATP ranking. The wins were also extremely dominant, dropping just two sets over the three tournaments (one each in the Australian Open and French Open).

Later in the year, he made his ATP debut as a wildcard entrant at the Moselle Open in Metz and lost in the quarterfinals to Richard Gasquet. He also qualified for the 2004 Paris Masters, where he lost to World No. 3 Lleyton Hewitt.

A year after turning pro, he won his first ATP title. Monfils was named the ATP Newcomer of the Year in 2005. In 2010, he won his second ATP title and earned a place in the Top 10 for the first time in his career.
